ABOUT US
Canopy Weather applies an application-first approach to deliver powerful weather data products with specific, real-world business applications. By asking the right questions and factoring in essential, overlooked variables, Canopy’s technology triangulates on valuable new insights into the most pressing questions in your business.
Before co-founding Canopy Weather, Don Giuliano and Matt Van Every were partners at Weather Fusion, a weather technology startup that serviced the storm restoration industry. After a period of rapid growth, they successfully sold Weather Fusion to CoreLogic (NYSE: CLGX) in 2014, and then spent several years working directly in the construction industry.
Now, Don and Matt look forward to applying their application-first approach to quantify direct, real-world impacts, and look forward to helping key industry leaders use weather data in ways more directly applicable to their business needs.
Our founders have led the weather verification industry for over 10 years.
THE TEAM
Don Giuliano | Meteorologist
Co-founder, Dataset Design
Don Giuliano is a Co-founder of Canopy Weather, a weather technology company that uses an application-first approach to deliver powerful weather data products with specific, real-world business applications.
Before starting Canopy, Don accumulated a wealth of experience in his field with several notable achievements. Directly after graduating, Don modernized website and product delivery infrastructure for the Oklahoma Climatological Survey (OCS), then left to manage research data and systems for the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms (CAPS).
Don’s passion for application-first, intelligent use of weather and climate data led him to found Weather Fusion in 2007. He soon left CAPS to pursue this passion full time. Through original science and pioneering technology, including automated severe hail, wind, and (prototyped) tornado forensics, Weather Fusion transformed how the storm restoration industry uses weather data. Following a period of rapid growth, Don successfully sold Weather Fusion to CoreLogic (NYSE: CLGX) in 2014. He then got directly in the construction industry by acquiring a roofing company in 2016. After several years of learning new insights into weather’s impact on day-to-day business operations, Don decided to exit the roofing business in 2019 and co-founded Canopy Weather.
Having experienced first-hand the value of taking an application-first approach when building weather datasets, Don is excited to re-engage with and promote this approach — both within Canopy and to anyone who will listen.
Don holds a B.S. in Meteorology and an M.S. in Professional Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma. Boomer Sooner!
Matt Van Every | Meteorologist
Co-founder, Business Applications
Matt Van Every is a Co-founder of Canopy Weather, a weather technology company that uses an application-first approach to deliver powerful weather data products with specific, real-world business applications.
Starting in high school and throughout his college career, Matt focused much of his energy on building custom high-performance race boats and motors from scratch. By the age of 18, he was given end-to-end responsibility for mid-6 figure project builds. By working directly with clients to solve complex issues, Matt gained an early appreciation for the importance of customer service and attention to design details. This experience laid the foundation for his future success as an entrepreneur.
After graduating, Matt founded his first company, EcoMotives, where he used his in-depth mechanical knowledge to offer the first environmentally-focused chemical distribution service in the Dallas Fort Worth area. He successfully competed with giants like BG and Valvoline before selling the company to get back to his true passion: Weather.
In 2009, Matt joined forces with Don Giuliano at Weather Fusion. Together, and with the help of a capable team, they would fuel the creation of the entire weather forensics industry as it exists today. From pioneering hail size technology, to the introduction of automated hail mapping and insurance claim verification products, Matt and Don transformed the storm restoration landscape. Following a period of rapid growth, Weather Fusion was successfully sold to CoreLogic (NYSE: CLGX) in 2014. Matt then spent several years working directly in the construction industry in search of new insights into weather’s impact on day-to-day business operations. He now seeks to use this knowledge to re-invent the weather forensics industry.
Matt has been chasing tornadoes, hail storms, hurricanes, and snow storms since he first got his driver’s license. Having witnessed first hand over 200 tornadoes, Matt understands the difference between ground truth and data-driven evidence.
Matt is a NOAA Hollings Scholar and holds B.S. Degrees in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma.
